Mahuwa Mission – 2025

Expanding Indigenous Forest Restoration and Livelihoods

Building upon the successful plantation of 1,000 Mahuwa saplings under Mahuwa Mission 2024, Mahuwa Mission 2025 represents a transition from a pilot initiative toward large-scale restoration, community engagement, and sustainable forest-based livelihoods in Dang district and beyond.

The mission integrates environmental conservation, Indigenous Tharu knowledge, and green enterprise development through community-led forest restoration and Mahuwa value-chain strengthening.

2025 Mission Targets

  • Plantation of 5,000+ Mahuwa saplings
  • Establishment of community-based Mahuwa nursery systems
  • Partnership with multiple Community Forest User Groups (CFUGs)
  • Development of Mahuwa value-added products
  • Expansion of Indigenous livelihood opportunities
  • Promotion of eco-tourism and environmental learning spaces

Current Progress (2025)

Mahuwa Mission 2025 has moved from planning into active implementation across community forests and selected private lands in Dang district. The mission is working toward its goal of restoring Indigenous tree ecosystems while strengthening community livelihoods.

Plantation Progress

The mission is progressing toward its target of planting 5,000+ Mahuwa saplings, with implementation already underway:

  • 1,000 Mahuwa saplings planted in Kalikhola Community Forest User Group (CFUG)
  • 1,000 Mahuwa saplings planted in Mankadari Community Forest User Group (CFUG), Ghorahi–17
  • 500 Mahuwa saplings planted on selected private lands
  • Additional plantation activities ongoing in:
    • Ambeshwori Women CFUG
    • Pathivarey CFUG
    • Gayatri CFUG

The remaining plantation activities will continue across partner community forests through community-led restoration efforts and Indigenous stewardship.
