Reviving Culture: Tharu Heritage Celebrated at Ashtimki Art and Song Workshop in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, August 24, 2024 – In a vibrant celebration of Tharu culture, the “अष्टिम्की चित्र कार्यशाला तथा सामूहिक गायन” (Ashtimki Art Workshop and Cultural Song Singing) event was successfully organized today at Barghar Tharu Restaurant, Tushal Boudha. The event, hosted by Khyal Bagal, highlighted the rich heritage of the Tharu community, focusing on the traditional Ashtimki Chitra painting and Ashtimki songs.

Ashtimki Chitra, a traditional wall painting created during the Ashtimki festival, serves as a visual representation of the evolution and stories of the Tharu community. Participants were introduced to the unique techniques of creating these paintings using natural colors, a tradition that dates back centuries.

The painting workshop was led by Mitthu Tharu, a renowned artist in the Tharu community, who provided hands-on training to attendees, guiding them through the process of creating their own Ashtimki paintings. The workshop was accompanied by soulful performances of traditional Tharu songs, led by vocalist Samiksha Chaudhary and music by Pushkar Mahatou, bringing the cultural essence of the Tharu community to life.

The event was well-attended by artists, cultural enthusiasts, and community members who came together to celebrate and preserve the vibrant traditions of the Tharu community. The participants expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to learn and engage with this important aspect of Nepal’s cultural heritage.

The event was made possible through the exclusive support of the New Jersey Tharu Community and was further supported by the Nepal Youth Council, Let’s Read, and Kopila Kitab. Sajha Katha served as the media partner, while Barghar Tharu Restaurant provided the venue and culinary delights that added to the cultural experience.

This event marked a significant step in promoting and preserving the traditional art forms and songs of the Tharu community, ensuring that these practices continue to thrive for generations to come.
